40 medals at Tokyo 2020

Italy closes the Tokyo 2020 Games with 40 medals. It’s an all-time record, since the highest medal count had been 36. The list of Italian highlights at the Olympics includes women and men. It includes first-time medals for many sports and a few confirmations. There have been surprises and there have been champions who showed up to win. After the first five days of the “bronze curse,” Italian athletes came back stronger than ever. Really.

The Italian highlights at the Olympics

It’s impossible not to begin with the first gold medal at Tokyo 2020. And it happened during the first day of the Games. It couldn’t get any better.

Vito Dall’Aquila, gold in taekwondo

”This has been a long, exhausting but amazing journey. This victory isn’t only mine. It also belongs to everyone who has worked with me to help me achieve this goal.”

Men’s 4×100 freestyle gets its first medal ever

The team made of Lorenzo Zazzeri, Alessandro Miressi, Thomas Ceccon, and Manuel Frigo swam below the Italian record, at 3’10”11. And this time was worth the silver during day 3 at the Olympics.

Women bring the second gold to Rome

It’s the duo of lightweight rowing, the power couple Federica Cesarini and Valentina Rodini. This is the first medal for a women’s duo at the Olympics. Indeed, another record broken.

Maria Centracchio and her powerful judo

It’s a bronze medal, weighting -63kg.

Gregorio Paltrinieri replies “ready”

The Italian swimmer worried of his performance. Recently diagnosed with mononucleosis, the champion was afraid of being too tired and sick. Then, he won the silver in the 800 freestyle. And he felt better. Then, he won the bronze in the men’s open water 10km marathon. And he smiled for days.

Irma Testa wins bronze in boxing

It’s another record shattered by the Italian athletes. In fact, Irma Testa is the first woman to ever win an Olympic medal in this specialty.

The champions of weightlifting

Two medals, one from a man and the other from a woman. One is the bronze Antonino Pizzolato in the 81kg, while the other is the silver of Giorgia Bordignon in the -64kg category.

Vanessa Ferrari makes her comeback

The Italian gymnast faced many issues throughout her career. From disappointments to injuries, she thought about giving up more than once. Luckily, Vanessa Ferrari stuck with it, until she won the silver in the individual floor final.

Counting the gold medals

Two more golds came from Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti in the Nacra 17 sailing race. The second came from the men’s cycling track team pursuit. Both fast and surprising, these results made Italians dream. Less fast but just as resistant was Luigi Busà in the karate -75kg.

Medal number 40

It’s the bronze of the rhythmic gymnastics group all-around. The “butterflies” reached a historic result, giving Italy its 40th medal at Tokyo 2020. Not too shabby. But are we missing something? Indeed, we are.
